For our first major curriculum unit, students will participate in a class reading of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, focusing on reading for figurative meaning in order to interpret the text for deeper meaning.

- Identify examples of figurative language in a work of fiction and consider the ways in which they work to develop character and theme
- Analyze themes as they develop over the course of a work, both orally and through writing
- Explain the ways in which fiction reflects the values and ideas of its time
Writing:
- Write a thesis statement offering an interpretation of a work of literature based on sound observations.
- Organize a body paragraph using specific evidence from a work of literature to support an interpretation.
Major Assessments
Students will complete a creative project examining one of the characters in the text, as well as compose a literary analysis essay.
