As we near the conclusion of the play, students will receive 3-4 different prompts for their argument essays on Romeo and Juliet. While up until this point our course has focused on writing literary analysis, argument writing will offer students the opportunity to turn their attention to a different kind of writing, in which they will be required to take a position on the play and defend it persuasively. Romeo and Juliet is a text uniquely suited to this kind of writing, since nearly every character, situation and outcome is open to interpretation.
